Consoles and login shells

There are no terminals - use console or ssh/telnet from PC or Mac

Screensaver is active on the console. If screen is blank, move the mouse to get login screen. If login screen still doesn't appear, make sure the monitor is on. Otherwise, please get help from lab personnel.

Do not leave the console without logging out. There is a small exit button on the control dashboard at the bottom of the screen for logging out of the console session.

Unattended login sessions at the console are problematic. For one thing, you leave your account open to anyone to do anything they want to it. For another, the screen saver lock may have time to kick in and then nobody can use that machine until it is unlocked by either you or the system administrator.

Accounts and Passwords

How your Unix account comes into being

Our system for creating Unix accounts depends strictly on your enrollment status in a particular class as obtained from the Office of Admissions and Records. You will have a separate account for each class that is supported by the Unix facility. Accounts are not created on an individual request basis.

If you are already enrolled in a class, then you will be able to retrieve your class account information from the account information server. You can find a link to the server near the top of the Unix lab home page. Your instructor should let you know what the username and password is for access to the information service itself. Once you have access to the service home page, you are encouraged to read the instructions located there.

If you add the class OR register late, then the account creation process begins after you register for the class. During the first few weeks of the quarter, the registrar's database is downloaded every other day and new accounts are created. Your new account information is accessible by the information server at that time.

CAVEATS: Be sure you specify the correct course section on your registration materials and that you pay your fees up front.

Accessing Your Account

The first phase of accessing your account involves a process called authentication. The essential information for successfully completing this process is provided to you on your account card. This information consists of two pieces known as your username/accountname, and your password. The username/accountname is not changeable by you, but the password is.

Your Unix account does not exist on any of the particular hosts you may choose to access. It is a Unix network account which means that if you decide to change your password, the change will be known to all the hosts at the same time. It also means there is a unified view of your files from any of the accessible hosts since your files are transferred via the network to and from an NFS file server. In other words, your stuff is available from any of the hosts without regards to previous use. You might want to consider the relative usage and availablility of a host before establishing a login or ftp session.

Please read about Changing your network password before attempting to change your login password.

How your Unix account ceases to be

The account deletion process does not start before the end of the current academic term and is completed by the beginning of the next academic term. This leaves a period of uncertainty during which your account may be accessible and then cease without notification.

However, your files may persist for a short while longer while instructors finish their end of quarter grading that depend on your content. In other words, your account content is first frozen and then some time later fully deleted.

Your text files are backed up incrementally during the quarter and then completely at the end of quarter. Since higher order content such as graphics and multimedia is not created within the Unix facility, it is assumed you have the originals backed up someplace else. Any restorals are not provided as a service after the term is finished except to help instructors resolve grading conflicts.
